CYCLOMETHICONE NF ~ Cyclomethicone is a clear, odorless,
silicone-based oil that is incredibly useful and
versatile in a number of bath & body recipes. It is
a synthetic unmodified silicone that stays on the surface
of the skin - the molecules are too big to physically
enter past the upper living cells. It doesn't really
have any "healing" or "moisturizing" qualities in and of
itself - think of it more as a "carrier." Because it
evaporates relatively quickly, it is most commonly used
to carry fragrance or essential oils in linen sprays,
body sprays, and roll-on "dry" perfumes. It also is used
in lotions to impart a slick, silky feel - and is widely
used in hair treatments. It mixes with
fragrance or essential oils beautifully.
Flash Point: 170 degrees F
INCI: Cyclomethicone
Here are a few ideas!!
Dry Oil Body Spray/Perfume: Mix in fragrance oil or essential
oil at any
dilution depending on desired strength and recommended
usage levels. Common dilution rates are 1
part FO/6 parts cyclomethicone, up to 1 part FO/3 parts
cyclomethicone. ("Parts" being whatever measurement you would
like it to be).
After Bath/Shower Body Oil: Mix in concentrations up to
50/50 with your favorite vegetable or botanical oil
(soybean oil is a great one to use) and add fragrance oil
or essential oil
to desired strength.
Spray on the skin after you shower and pat dry, while skin
is still
damp. Gently rub in, like you would lotion. Leaves your
skin feeling so silky
smooth yet not greasy at all! (This is my new best friend).
Linen/Pillow Spray & Room Spray: Mix the same way you
do for a body spray! Shouldn't leave linens wet or stained!
(NOTE: Do a test on white linen to make sure the fragrance
oil doesn’t stain though!)
Hair: Use on hair as a detangler & defrizzing agent
(spray on wet hair). Spray on dry hair for a shine!
Or add to hair conditioners for detangling properties!
Lotion: Add to lotions, creams, body butters and lotion
bars to give a silky feeling (add up to 1% to pre-made
lotion base, or 5% or more to lotion made from scratch)
Bath Oils, Salts & Scrubs: Add to bath oils or scrubs
for a silky less greasy feel. Use in place of glycerin
in bath salts to impart a silky feel and give salts a
nice sheen!
Insect Repellent Spray: Just add your favorite blend
of bug repellant essential oil such as lemongrass,
eucalyptus,
peppermint, tea tree,
lavender, etc. You will have a nice smelling
insect repellent!
Important Notes:
- Measure the cyclomethicone first and then add the fragrance or essential oil. For some reason doing it the other way makes the mixture cloudy. Measuring the cyclomethicone first and adding the fragrance to it keeps it clear.
- Cyclomethicone can stain some fabrics. Be careful of it on certain clothes or linens.
- make sure the skin you are applying the mixture to is clean. The cyclomethicone acts as a protective "layer" on the skin, sealing all the "good" oils in...but also and "bad" stuff in.
- If you are using a particularly strong fragrance oil, use a lower ratio. If you are using a light essential oil blend or want a strong product - use a higher ratio.
- Bottles - use Glass, HDPE, or PET.
