Jelly Belly Tour

 kids-at-jelly-belly

This last weekend we decided to take a mini road trip to the Jelly Belly Center in Pleasant Prairie, WI.  They offer a free  1/2 hour train tour of the distribution center, but the line was so long, we optied for the walking tour (saw the same things).  It was quite interesting.  They featured some of their artwork from their bean art gallery  of  famous people, and yes it is all done with Jelly Bellies. WOW, that was pretty cool!  At the end of the tour you receive a free sample pack of Jelly Bellies, before they let you off at their retail store to shop.  Of course, we bought some Jelly Bellies, to share at our Easter dinner.  It was a nice day out and all in all the kids like it.

How to Wick a Metal Candle Mold

We have been asked many times “How do you wick a metal candle mold?”  It is difficult to explain over the phone, so we decided to post a step by step instruction sheet.  Once you try it, it will make more sense.

Fig. 1

Fig. 1

Equipment needed.  Metal mold, clamp, mold sealer, wicking, rod, and scissors. (Fig. 1)

Fig. 2

Fig. 2

Uncoil a strand of wicking and, using the mold as a guide, measure a section that is about 6 inches longer than the height of the metal mold. (Fig. 2)

Fig. 3

Fig. 3

Snip this section of wick with a knife or scissors. (Fig. 3)

Fig. 4

Fig. 4

Take one end of the wick and make a two-inch loop. (Fig. 4)

Fig. 5

Fig. 5

Place a small stick perpendicular to the wick one inch from the top of the loop. (Fig. 5)

Fig. 6

Fig. 6

Fold the loop in half around the stick. (Fig. 6)

Fig. 7

Fig. 7

Take the long end of the wick and the short end of the wick and pull them through the loop.

(Fig. 7)

Pull tight. You have just made a tight slipknot around the small stick.

(Fig. 8 )

Fig. 9

Fig. 9

Thread the end of the wick that is farthest from the small stick through the small hole in the bottom of the metal candle mold. (Fig. 9)

Fig. 10

Fig. 10

Feed the wick into the metal candle mold until the end of the wick reaches the large opening. Grasp this section (Fig. 10) and gently pull the wick until there is no more than 1 inch of wick between the bottom of the metal candle mold and the small stick.

(Fig. 11 below)

Fig. 11

Remember:

This “bottom” part of the metal candle mold will contain the top of the finished candle, and the wick will need to be trimmed further before the candle can be burned.

Fig. 12

Fig. 12

Take a clump of mold sealer and tear off a wad about the size of a piece of chewed bubble gum. (Fig. 12)

Fig. 13

Fig. 13

Press until the piece of mold sealer is semi-flat and smooth and is about 1/4 inch thick. Make sure the piece is firm, with no air pockets or thin spots that might allow hot wax to seep through it. (Fig. 13)

Fig. 14

Fig. 14

At the bottom of the metal candle mold, place the piece of mold sealer on the wick and mold it all the way around the wick and over the hole.

(Fig. 14)

Fig. 15

Fig. 15

Press down firmly against the metal candle mold to seal tightly. Make sure that the mold sealer covers the hole/wick uniformly. (Fig. 15)

Fig. 16

Fig. 16

Pull on the end of the wick that is at the large opening of the metal candle mold so that the small stick with the knot gets firmly pulled into the mold sealer. (Fig. 16)

Fig. 17

Fig. 17

Press down tightly on the small stick and mold sealer to ensure an even tighter seal.

(Fig. 17)

Fig. 18)

Fig. 18

Turn the metal candle mold over so that the large opening is at the top, and set it on a level countertop. (Fig. 18)

Fig. 19

Fig. 19

Pull the wick up so that it becomes taut. (Fig. 19)

Fig. 20

Fig. 20

Take a wick rod and lay it across the large opening of the metal candle mold. (Fig. 20)

Fig. 21

Fig. 21

Wrap the wick around the wick rod, always keeping the wick taut. (Fig. 21)

Fig. 22

Fig. 22

Secure the wick to the wick rod with a binder clip. Keep the wick taut—no bends—and centered in the mold. (Fig. 22)

Congratulations! You have just wicked your metal candle mold, and you are now ready to begin pouring your candle!

Chocolate Milk Bath Recipe

chocolate-milk-bath-full-imageAnother great project out of the Totally Cool Soapmaking for Kids Book.  Eventhough, this is out of a kids book, I think any age would have fun, especially with the chocolate aroma that it has.  We decorated this towards Valentines Day, but it would make a great birthday gift, hostess gift, or mothers day gift.

 Ingredients:

Place all dry ingredients into zip-lock bag; add fragrance oils and shake to mix.  Spoon desired amount in dome cream jars. Decorate to your desire.  To use, spoon 1/4 cup of the chocolate milk bath into a warm bath.  Enjoy!
