Customer Question: One-Pour vs. Two-Pour

We had a customer ask a question recently:  “What is a two-pour wax?”  We have been asked this question a lot, therefore, we wanted to share the answer with everyone.

A two-pour wax, which is also known as a double pour wax, is a wax that expands when melted and contracts when cooled.  This alteration causes the wax to sink and, thus, requires a second pour to create a smooth, even finish.  Multi-pour waxes (waxes requiring more than two pours) react in the same way.

A one-pour wax is completely different.  Under optimal circumstances, a one-pour (or single pour) wax is a wax that only needs to be poured one time for a great finished look.  These waxes were invented for incredibly minimal shrinkage.

If you have a question that you would like to see answered on our blog, email us at:  nssupport@nuscentscandle.com and put “BLOG QUESTION” in the subject line.

Fragrance Wheel

fragrance-wheel

1983 Fragrance Wheel

In 1983, Michael Edwards (a consultant in the fragrance industry) created a fragrance classification method called the Fragrance Wheel.  His method was created in order to make the fragrance classification and naming scheme simpler, as well as, to show the relationships between each individual fragrance family.

There are four standard families:  Floral, Oriental, Woody, and Fresh.  The families are further  divided into three subgroups and arranged in a circle, each group being related to the next.  The only exception to this design is the Fougère family which contains elements from many of the other families (hence why it sits in the center of the Fragrance Wheel).

With the development of new technologies and advanced efforts in perfumeries, new scents are now able to be created that were never thought possible decades ago.  Due to these advancements, two more subgroups have been added since the creation of the Fragrance Wheel in 1983:  Woods and Fruity.  Below you will find more information on the subgroups and their scent characteristics.

  • Floral (Floral + Fresh Notes) From the scents of a single flower to full aromatic bouquets of fresh-cut flowers.
  • Soft Floral (Floral Notes) Powdery notes and aldehydes added with floral to create subtly singing fragrances.
  • Floral Oriental (Floral + Oriental Notes) Subtly muted fragrances including orange blossom, piquant aldehydes, and sweet spices.
  • Soft Oriental (Oriental + Floral Notes) Sensual overtones to flowers using incense, spices, and amber.
  • Oriental (Oriental Notes) Blends of oriental resins, sweet vanillas, opulent flowers, and musks.
  • Woody Oriental (Oriental + Woody Notes) Oriental influenced scents balancing the deep woods notes of sandalwood and patchouli.
  • Woods (Woody Notes) Dominated by harmonies of cedar, patchouli, pine, sandalwood, other woody scents, and vetiver.
  • Mossy Woods (Woody + Oriental Notes) A melange of oakmoss, amber, bergamot, neroli, and other citrus Chypre.
  • Dry Woods (Woody Notes) Drier than Mossy Woods with added cedar, tobacco, burnt wood, leather, and dry wood notes.
  • Citrus (Woody + Fresh Notes) Zest of lemons, mandarins, oranges, grapefruit, and bergamot.
  • Fruity (Fruity Notes) Combinations of berries, peaches, pears, apples, plums, and other non-citrus fruits.
  • Green (Fresh Notes) Captures the scent of fresh cut grass, violet leaves, galbanum, and other “green” notes.
  • Water (Fresh + Floral Notes) The essence of marine and aquatic notes, soft sea breezes, wet air after a storm, and the like.
  • Fougère Freshness of the Citrus Family, lavender notes of Floral, the spicy-sweetness of Floral Oriental, Oriental’s depth of amber, and the sandalwood and oakmoss warmth of Mossy Woods.

Use this wonderful After Bath Oil to leave your skin silky smooth after a bath or shower (without being greasy!).  The Avocado Oil is highly therapeutic and rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B5, D, E, minerals, and protein.  The essential oil combination is calming and is great at detoxifying and purifying the body.

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. In a sterile container, pour in 1 ounce Cyclomethicone.
  2. Add 1 ounce Avocado Oil to the Cyclomethicone and mix well.
  3. Completely stir in 3 mL of Lavender EO and 0.5 mL of Sweet Fennel EO.  NOTE–Be sure to use separate pipettes for each EO so as to not contaminate the oils.
  4. Once all of the oils are thoroughly mixed together, carefully pour the After Bath Oil up to the bottom of the neck of the Bottle (this leaves room for the mister cap).
  5. Screw the mister cap tightly onto the bottle.
  6. Allow the oil to sit for a few days before use.

Usage:

After a warm bath or shower, spray (or splash if you’re using a bottle that does not have a mister cap) the After Bath Oil on your body while your skin is still damp.  Gently rub in, like a lotion.

What better way to say “Thank you” to your mom this Mother’s Day than with these uplifting Bath Melts?  The Grapefruit Essential Oil is great for relieving migraines, PMS, and stress; it also helps balance emotions and brighten moods!  The Salts are soothing, while the Mango Butter prevents the drying of skin (which prevents wrinkles), reduces degeneration of the skin cells, and restores flexibility of the skin!  These Bath Melts are a woman’s dream come true.

Ingredients:

Directions: makes approximately 24 melts

  1. Melt 3/4 cup Mango Butter in a double boiler.  Remove from heat.
  2. Slightly dab a Paper Towel into the melted Mango Butter and lightly coat the inside of the Fortune Cookie Molds.
  3. In a sterile container, mix 1/3 cup of Sea Salt with 12 drops Tropical Red Colorant until the salt is a uniform color.
  4. In another sterile container, thoroughly mix 5 teaspoons Natrasorb with 1/4 teaspoon Grapefruit EO.

  6. Fill the mold cavities approximately halfway up with the Sea Salt mixture.
  7. Pour the melted Mango Butter over the salt in the Molds.
  8. Carefully put the Molds in the freezer.
  9. After about an hour, remove one of the Molds from the freezer.
  10. Gently remove the Bath Melts from the Mold.  NOTE–you may have to wiggle and tap the Mold on the table to release the melts.
  11. Wrap each Bath Melt in Plastic Wrap.
  12. Repeat steps 9-11 for the other Molds.
  13. Place the wrapped Bath Melts in the Chinese Takeout Box.
  14. Usage:

Use one Fortune Cookie Bath Melt per bath.  As the tub is filling, toss in one Fortune Cookie.  Get in and enjoy this luxurious bath.  Be extremely careful getting out of the tub because it will be slippery!!!
