Votives on a Rope

We’ve all heard of Soap on a Rope. Now we’ve created Votives on a Rope! These candles are a unique design that can be a gorgeous complement to any decor. Use them as hanging decor only or cut off one votive at a time for your burning pleasure! Whatever your preference, the Votives on a Rope are sure to be a beautiful conversation piece.
Materials:
- 1 pound Starburst Palm Wax
- 1.5 ounces Lavender Eucalyptus Fragrance Oil
- Purple Liquid Candle Dye
- 50 inches #2 Square Braid Wicking
- 2 Round Votive Candle Molds
- 1 Square Votive Candle Mold
- 2 Octagon Votive Candle Molds
- 5 Votive Wick Pins
- Box
- Size 2 Knitting Needle
- Beads and/or Baubles (optional)
Directions:
- Place a Wick Pin in each of the Votive Molds and center them.
- Melt the Starburst Wax in a double boiler and get it to a temperature of approximately 180-200 degrees F.
- Add 1 drop of Purple Dye and mix in completely.
- Thoroughly stir in all of the Lavender Eucalyptus FO.
- Pour the wax into one of the Round Votive Molds.
- Cover this Mold with a Box to ensure crystallization of the wax.
- Keep the temperature of the wax at 180-200 degrees F.
- Add 2 drops of Purple Dye and mix in completely.
- Pour the wax into one of the Octagon Votive Molds.
- Cover this Mold with a Box.
- Get the temperature of the wax back to 180-200 degrees F.
- Add 2 drops of Purple Dye and mix in completely.
- Pour the wax into the Square Votive Mold.
- Cover this Mold with a Box.
- Repeat steps 7-12.
- Repeat steps 5-6.
- Allow the wax to fully cool.
- Take the Wick Pins and wax out of the molds.
- Carefully remove the Wick Pins from the wax. (NOTE–we used Palm Wax because it is a harder wax. When we tried the Votives on a Rope with Soy Wax, the Square and Octagon Votives had their corners break off when taking the Wick Pin out of the wax.)
- Heat up the Knitting Needle so that it’s really hot.
- Take the Knitting Needle and carefully push it through the wick hole in one of the votives. (If the Needle is hot enough it should be like taking a hot knife to butter.) Do this for the remaining votives.
- Take the #2 Wicking, measure 6.5 inches from the end, and tie a knot at this spot. NOTE–we will be working from the bottom to top.
- Take the darkest colored round votive and thread it onto the Wicking that is furthest away from the knot.
- Measure 2.5 inches above the round votive and tie another knot.
- Take the darkest colored octagon votive and thread it onto the Wicking.
- Measure 2.5 inches above the octagon votive and tie another knot.
- Take the square votive and thread it onto the Wicking.
- Measure 2.5 inches above the square votive and tie a knot.
- Take the last octagon votive and thread it onto the Wicking.
- Measure 2.5 inches above the octagon votive and tie a knot.
- Take the last round votive and thread it onto the Wicking.
- Measure 2.5 inches above the round votive and tie a looped knot (this will be the hanger for the Votives on a Rope).
- Optional: Instead of doing step 30, you can add beads or baubles to dress up the top. Tie a knot 2.5 inches above the top votive add a few beads and then tie a looped knot. You can also add beads to the bottom to match the top.
- Hang the Votives on a Rope in the perfect spot to add color and an alluring fragrance to the air.
Since we did not preheat the molds and since the wax in our example was heated and cooled so many times, each votive took on its own unique finish. None of the votives crystallized the same way, which we found added more character to the piece!
