Product Description

NOTE: Completed HAZMAT WAIVER FORM REQUIRED for purchase– NO EXCEPTIONS!!! Orders will be placed on HOLD without form.

Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye, is a caustic metallic base used in cold process soap making but also has other applications such as making biodiesel fuel, paper making, textiles, curing olives and cleaning products. We carry sodium hydroxide in bead form which is easiest to handle and recommended for most soap making recipes. The purity grade is 98.5%

*Sodium hydroxide may not be purchased as a stand alone item or with potassium hydroxide or citric acid. You must purchase this item with other non-caustic supplies.

Shipping Restrictions:

  • We are only permitted to ship sodium hydroxide within the 48 contiguous states.
  • Shipping to Canada, Alaska, Hawaii or anywhere outside the continental United States is prohibited.
  • Sodium hydroxide can only be shipped via ground. Next Day, 2nd Day, or 3rd Day Air is not permitted.
  • Due to state and local regulations, Nu-Scents reserves the right to refuse any sale and cancel your order.

Sodium Hydroxide/Lye Care Tips:

  • Adding sodium hydroxide to water releases a large amount of heat. To prevent overheating, add the lye to the water slowly, not the other way around. The heat capacity of the water will help absorb the heat.
  • Sodium hydroxide can cause burns, damage and discolor clothing, as well as irritate eyes and nasal passages. Protect yourself by wearing gloves and safety goggles and even a face mask with filter is recommended.
  • Sodium hydroxide can be fatal if swallowed. If accidently consumed immediately seek medical attention. Do not induce vomiting. Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Be sure to work in a well ventilated area. Noxious fumes will be released when mixing sodium hydroxide with water.
  • Have a bottle of vinegar handy when working with sodium hydroxide. Vinegar can neutralize the burning and irritation if the lye contacts your skin.
  • Use only containers made from plastic, glass, stainless steel, or heat proof stoneware. Sodium hydroxide will react with aluminum, tin and zinc.
  • Even after you have completed making your soap, the lye can still burn or irritate your skin. It is recommended not to handle the fresh with bare skin for 48 hours.
  • Be sure to keep sodium hydroxide in a tightly closed container as moisture in the air will cause its strength to weaken. Store in a cool, dry place.

  1. Great customer service

Posted by Andrea Fogg on 21st Jan 2013

The product is lye, so it's basic and works fine. Shipping was fast and packed well.

What I appreciated was the excellent customer service. There was something missing or not quite right with the hazmat information, and NuScents was on the issue immediately. They contacted me directly and helped me with the form and I got my order asap. Anyone can sell a product, it's when you have a problem that you appreciate a good company.
